It took months before I got around to checking out the newest edition to the Daegu breakfast scene Hami Mami’s. Hami Mami’s has two locations, one just down the road from the Camp Walker gates and another in the first level of Club That downtown. Hami’s is Korean owned and operated with a fully Western breakfast (bacon and eggs that is, not lassos and chaps).
The food at Hami Mami’s is average for Korea. It feels some what authentic but lacks that certain something needed to really hit the spot. The sausages were dry, and the hash browns were heavy and cold. The coffee is self-serve and god-awful even by local standards. Free refills mean nothing to me when I can’t stomach the first cup. One thing old Hami does right is provide a comfortable familiar atmosphere that’s sunny and warm. The service on-the-other hand is not sunny or warm and slow as molasses even when the place is empty. I know that in Korea the coffee comes last but if you run a place like this you should know do bring it first, especially when it’s only the cup you have to bring to the table. Hami Mami’s is not terrible, I’d go there again if I can get myself out of bed on a weekend. It is after all one of the only places to get a good old fashion breakfast in Daegu. One hopes that despite the near-monopoly they’d make a bit of an effort to rise above.
Hami’s also serves lunch including BLT’s, Club sandwiches, fries, fish and chips and salads. The sandwiches at the downtown location are on the small side and made with the same Emart bread, albeit in bun form. Service there is also slow and down right illogical with the fries arriving ten minutes after the sandwich and my coffee arriving ten minutes after that. These kind of things could be forgiven but on both occasions and at both locations I’ve had shitty service when the place was empty or nearly empty.

The atmosphere in the downtown location is also a great plus. Ecclectic and warm with enough art, knick nacks to make you forget you’re in Korea. They even have a wood burning oven to heat the place in the winter. One of the drawback of this loctation is that it is located in the same building as one of Daegu’s biggest and most popular night clubs for foreigners. Do people really want to stumble back to the scene of the crime the next morning?
Update: As of March, Hami Mami’s Club That location closed indefinitely.
