“Daytime Drinking” Brings Korean Drinking Culture to the Big Screen

“Daytime Drinking”, winner of the audience award at the Jeonju International Film Festival, is a quirky comedy that is billed as marking the rise of Korean “independent ” film.  The film was a big hit at last year’s Toronto International Festival, with reviewers calling it a “remarkable achievement for its shoestring budget,” and “a truly independent project with an untamed spirit. Intense, yet lighthearted, it strays from the bloodless mold of melancholic, contemplative films to find a direct path to the audience’s mind.”

After a successful screening at SXSE this synopsis was released: After Hyuk-Jin gets dumped, he hangs out at a bar with his friends. Totally drunk, they decide to travel to console his broken heart.  The next day, Hyuk-Jin arrives at the destination, but he finds himself alone since his friends had terrible hangovers and couldn’t meet him. He encounters a strange couple and gets invited for a drink. The next morning, he wakes up on a snowy road with no cell phone, wallet, or pants. A kind, but somewhat weird driver offers him a drive and a drink again. Now Hyuk-jin has to find a way to get out of the world’s worst hangover and end his drunken odyssey.

The film lists nine rules in Korean drinking culture, most of which are probably familiar to our readers. Rule #1: Never refuse the first drink, reminds me of the security guard in my building who is forever winking at me and whispering, “Hey, Winston (not my name), Korea whiskey, one shot? Okay.” Who can say no?

The trailer is now up on iTunes. You can also check out the official website for more information. The film opened across the United States throughout May and June, but its Korean release date is not yet determined.

“Daytime Drinking” is directed by Young-seok NOH, and stars Sam-dong SONG, Sang-yuep YUK, Kang-hee KIM, Sueng-jun TAK, Lan-hee LEE, and Soo-an YOON.
