Total Museum of Contemporary Art

 Total Museum of Contemporary Art

Total Museum of Contemporary Art is located in northern Seoul’s Pyeongchang-dong art district. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the work of both local and international contemporary artists. It opened as the first private gallery in Korea and was designed by Korean architect, Shin-Kyu Moon. Using environmental design elements, Moon created a distinctive space that incorporates the site’s geographical features into the overall structure. Gardens, natural light, exposed rock, and cave-like lower levels mingle with the modern design features and pieces on display.  What makes TCMA is a compelling walk-through is the seamless way it positions contemporary art in nature.TCMA’s current exhibit, “London Calling: Who Gets to Run the World,” runs until July 26th, and  features works by eight British artists: Phillip Allen, Fionna Banner, David Batchenor, Martin Creed, Dryden Goodwin, Peter MacDonald, Nathaniel Rackowe, and Gary Webb. Rackowe’s Black Shed, 2008,  is shown above. Other exhibition favorites include Martin Creed’s five minute video, Work No.660, 2007, which was banned in Japan, and Fionna Banner’s video installation titled All the World’s Fighter Planes, 2005-2007.
