Daegu Art Cinema (also known as the Daegu Cinematheque), has been one of the only places to see films outside the mainstream since 1992. The theatre is programmed by Nam Tae Woo, a professor of film studies at Keimyung University in west Daegu. As of this year they have been supported by the Korean Film Counsel, KOFIC

Daegu Art Cinema is affiliated with seven other art house theatres in Gwangju, Busan, Jeju, Cheongju and the Seoul Cinematheque. Many of the big programmes like the Spanish Film Festival (coming to Daegu Sept. 17th to the 22nd), travel the circuit from city to city.

A large number of the films are in English or have English subtitles. The best way to find out which ones do, check the Seoul Cinematheque schedule and look for the small encircled “e”.

Professor Woo has plans to start screening Korean independent films with English subtitles as soon as the demand is there. To help lobby for the Daegu Art Cinema to show Korean films with English subtitles vote with your feet and check out some of the upcoming films. This month they are screening “El Bano Del Papa“, César Charlone’s touching comedy about the Pope’s visit to a small town South Amercia, “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” master filmmaker Sidney Lumet’s latest staring Seymour Hoffman, “London, Mon Amour” a comedy about French settlers in London, and “Paris” starring Juliette Binoche about a Frenchman who is obsessed with death.

Memberships are w20,000 a year and will get you a w2000 discount on every ticket or w5,000 a year that will get you w1000 off every ticket. The Daegu Art Cinema is also host to the Daegu Independant Short Film Festival every December. The  theatre is located in the Dong Seong Art hall in Gyodong Market.
