7th Annual Daegu International Opera Festival
Korea’s biggest opera festival is set to begin on Sept. 18th at the Daegu Opera House. The six week long event includes a fashion show presenting Korean designer Andre Kim’s take on Baroque era opera costumes (Friday Sep. 18 at 7:30pm) and the Opera Opera Concert (Wed. Sept. 23 at 7:30pm) a free event performed by the Korean Pops Orchestra. Five operas will be performed throughout the event including Puccini’s Turandot, Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz, Gaetano Donizetti‘s L’Elisir d’Amore, Georges Bizet‘s Carmen and Sung-ryong Cho’s Won’s Mother based on the novel “Neungsohwa” written by Cho Doo-jin.

Der Freischütz or “The Marksman” based on a German folk tale set in the Bohemian forest during the 17th century will be performed by Germany’s Karlsruhe National Theater. The opera tells the story of a German legend that by selling your soul to the Demon Hunter you could obtain seven magic bullets that will never miss their target. Performances are scheduled for Thurs. Oct 15 and 7:30pm and Sat. Oct. 17th at 3pm.

Carmen is a co-production between the Daejeon Culture and Arts Center, Daegu Opera House and Goyang Culture Foundation. The story of Carmen is set in nineteenth century Spain, and tells the story of Carmen, a beautiful hot-blooded Gypsy who woos Don José, a young soldier. Their relationship leads to his ruin for Don José and a tragic end to Carmen. Performances are scheduled for Oct.29~30 at 7:30pm and twice on Sat. Oct. 31 at 3pm and 7:30pm

Won’sMother composed by Sung-ryong Cho is about a mummy found in 1998 in Andong that dated back to the Joseonera. Found next to the mummy was a pair of hemp shoes and a love letter from he man’s wife. Cho based the opera on the novel “Neungsohwa” about the true story of the discovery of the 400 year-old pieces in November of 2007. Performances are scheduled for Fri. Oct. 23 at 7:30pm and Sat. Oct. 24 at 3pm
