Poached News: The Won’s Highest in a Year, Migrant Workers and Occupational Safety, Patient Gouging, and a KORAIL Scalper
The Won rose to its highest this year against the U.S. dollar. Closing at w1,780 to the dollar yesterday, it was the Won’s strongest performance against the dollar since December 26, 2008. Migrant workers experienced a significant increase in the number of work related deaths and injuries in 2008. Eight hospitals are facing a three billion won fine for overcharging their patients. Among the eight hospitals charged are Seoul National University Hospital, Yonsei Severance Hospital, Asan Medical Centre, Samsung Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital. In an attempted scheme to cash in on the Chuseok rush, a KORAIL employee was caught scalping train tickets.
