The recent flurry of cooperative initatives between China, Japan and Korea is seeming to warm relations that are usually undermined by historical hangups and unwavering domestic agendas.  The multilateral efforts continue today with the Japanese PM Yukio Hatoyama in Seoul to meet with Lee Myung-bak before the two travel to Beijing to hold talks with Chinese PM Wen Jiabao. The trio will likely discuss ways to strengthen relations between their countries as well as regional security.  Hatoyama and Lee are looking to get China’s support for the newly proposed  “grand bargain” solution that aims to push North Korean denuclearization into its final stages.  In an unprecedented move to strengthen ties between the three countries, a Japanese foreign minister has proposed the development of a common history book between the East Asian countries that will finally recognize their shared history and clear up controversies.  Other efforts to set the record straight: foreigners in Seoul are being reminded that the medical referral service has been around since 1976 and is a valuable but underutlized resource; unwed mothers in Korea are beginning to share their stories and affirm their rights in hopes of breaking the stigma that surrounds them.
