Poached News: Single Ladies, Low-Income Debt, Nocturnal Kids, and Contemporary Turkish Art
Korea’s birthrate is one of the lowest among OECD countries and the rapidly growing number of single women in their 20′s and 30′s is causing concern among experts. While ladies who stay single longer are being blamed the country’s low fertility rate, the opposition Democratic Party says ineffective government policies are failing to help those in the low-income bracket and social minorities in light of a report that shows a rise in the number of people who can’t pay off debts of 1 million won or less. Another recent study blames tutoring and after-school lessons at hagwons, excessively bright lighting, light pollution from computers and TV’s, and high-rise apartments for the “nocturnalization” of Korean children. Meanwhile, at the Seoul Museum of Art, the City_net Asia 2009 exhibit is drawing attention for its rare look at contemporary Turkish art.
