Poached News: Toxic Reports, Water Taxis, Rising Rents, New Services and Mariah’s Secret in Seoul
A Korea National Cancer Centre study, with Ewha, SNU, and the University of California, Berkeley, fails to find a clear link between cancer and cell phones, while the International Energy Agency (IEA) ranks Korea as the 9th largest polluter in its 2009 world energy report, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government continues to look into asbestos in the city. They released a report based on the random inspection of 66 buildings that found asbestos in approximately half, including a hospital and other public facilities.
In other reports from Seoul, Han River water taxis aren’t attracting commuters or the cash, rents continue to rise, and Mariah Carey says her secret is that she is “eternally 12.” Yesterday, the Joongang Daily announced that the Gangbuk District Office will start offering free interpretation services for foreigners at medical centres, eye clinics and pharmacies in English, French, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, German, and Spanish. Also new, are changes to the Family Relations Register certificate, that make it more convenient for foreigners in Korean families to sign-up and use its services.
