Poached News: Snowboard World Cup in Seoul, “English Spoken Here”, Tougher Sentencing, and More Foreigner Crime Stats
Seoul will host the 2009/2010 Men’s Big Air Snowboard World Cup on December 13th. The International Ski Federation’s decision makes Seoul the first Asian city to host the event. The main competition will take place at Gwanghwamun Square and other cultural events are planned for December 11th to 12th. The Seocho city district has announced that there are now 124 business in the area that advertise the service languages available at each. “English Spoken Here” signs, for example, will be displayed at the 105 businesses with an English-speaking staff. The other locations have Chinese, Japanese, French, and German-speaking staff. The participating businesses are mostly restaurants, but the list also includes hospitals, pharmacies, real-estate agencies and accommodations.
The recent public uproar surrounding the reduced sentence of the 34-year old man who raped an 8-year old girl is causing the courts to consider revising the sentencing of crimes where alcohol is involved. Following last week’s reports about the rising number of crimes committed by foreigners, a statement yesterday reveals that the number of sex-related crimes by foreigners increases every year.
