What’s New in Film

A few new cinema related items:
There is a retrospective of the late Yu Hyun-mok at the Seoul Cinematheque, December 1st-9th. Unfortunately, only two of the films are listed as having English subtitles: AN AIMLESS BULLET (1961), which played at Pusan this year and is generally regarded as his masterpiece (and a great film it is), and the lesser known GUESTS OF THE LAST TRAIN (1967).
In Hongdae on Sundays, there is a weekly double bill at a place called Godard Cinema Bar. These are DVD projections, but still a good place to see some Korean and foreign language films. All screenings have English subtitles. The schedule for the next two weeks is now listed:
Dec. 6th 17:00 13 TZAMETI (Gela Babluani, 2005); 19:00 MOTHER (Bong Joon-ho, 2009)
Dec. 13th 17:00 NINE QUEENS (Fabian Bielinsky, 2000); 19:00 PEPPERMINT CANDY (Lee Chang-dong, 1999)
The screening schedule is here and the directions are here.
Also, on-line, at the Korean Movie Database, there are a number of classic Korean films available for streaming. You have to register and there is a small fee, starting at 50oo won I believe, but nevertheless a good and relatively cheap place to view Korean cinema history. Note that you need a Windows machine, however. The link is here.
