In the next couple of weeks, there are a few independent film screenings that may be of interest to cinephiles in Seoul. The Cinematheque is showing a large program of Korean indies, ending on April 7th. Unfortunately, most don’t have English subtitles, although there are four that do: RE-ENCOUNTER (Min Yong-geun, 2010), COME, CLOSER (Kim Jong-kwan, 2010), PASSERBY #3 (Sin Su-won, 2010) and EVIL SPIRIT: VIY (Park Jin-sung, 2008). The schedule is available here. Also, at the Arthouse Moma, Mike Leigh’s latest film ANOTHER YEAR is now playing. The schedule is here. And starting in a couple of weeks is the 13th International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul. I’ll write a full preview next week, but you can check out the schedule now on their website.

Another Year is riveting. It’s played by members of Mike Leigh’s stock company, with Imelda Staunton appearing in a cameo role early on. It’s sometimes hard to believe they’re just acting. Someone on imdb complained that all the actors were ugly. Maybe so – Mike Leigh can’t afford Jude Law or Keira Knightley – but in compensation, the film has the best-looking Korean subtitles I’ve seen. However, since nearly all the characters are over 50, it’s not going to grab the local market. Incidentally, Leigh’s Secrets and Lies opened the first PIFF in 1996, and shortly afterwards got a wide commercial release here.

Saw ANOTHER YEAR over the weekend and agree that it is excellent. Might try to post a review if I get time because it is really worth talking about.
