TV Without TV: The Best Shows on the Web

TV Without TV: The Best Shows on the Web

With the limited number of channels in Korea that air TV shows in English and the absolute lack of any that regularly show TV that is actually interesting, the English community is left to get their eye candy on the web.  Good shows to watch online for free can be hard to come by, so The One One Four has compiled a list of some of the best places on the web to find TV, Film and Videos.  With sources like VBS, Cool Hunting, The Documentary Channel and great shows like “Diary of a Foodie” available online, anywhere in the world, free of charge, the web is now rivaling traditional TV with a  mix of first rate web-only content and content from major networks. We will also be looking at sites that provide a plethora of content to view in specific regions and pay content available in Korea. If you know of any other great sources for TV, film or videos on the web drop a link on the comment board and let everyone know.

Destination: Korea International Art Fair

The Costume of Painter – Phantom of Museum Au Bouguereau little thief – Oil and Lenticular on canvas by Bae Joon Sung.

Seeing art in Korea is about as difficult as finding kimchi at a Korean restaurant. Most buildings sponsor some abstract sculptures to decorate their buildings, while many other areas offer museum after museum. So why go to an art fair – to be surrounded by snooty, pretentious art whose price tags run into eight figures (Korean won, of course)? No – as a matter of course, most of the art seen here was neither snooty or pretentious art, but the prices on said art were still astronomical. The typical fair-goer is likely a person that appreciates art, and wants to see a wide variety of it without feeling any obligation to buy it. (more…)

Face to Face with the Face of Zoophilia: The One One Four Talks with Tiger and Bear

tandb1 Face to Face with the Face of Zoophilia: The One One Four Talks with Tiger and Bear
Performance artists Colin Riddle and James Topple, also known as “Tiger and Bear” have been in the media a lot these days. “It’s kind of like S and M,” Colin agrees. “We want to lose control. We don’t care what you write about us.” Colin has just moments ago broken six days of living as a mute to talk with The One One Four about what it is he and James do. “The media is a big part of it,” they say, “but mostly, its for our own enjoyment, there is no goal really, it is what it is.” We talked a lot in the beginning about the nature of their project and what it is they hope to achieve, Colin jotting notes on a pad and passing them to James to read. James, a print-maker, poet and performer, who is not comfortable with his work being contextualized, talked about the myth of the tiger and bear as the creation of Korean identity and how they are using the myth to engage with people and understand Korea’s modernization. “It’s really all about hanging around with Go Go Star and eating samgyeopsal in the mountains.”  It’s clear that there is not much to be learned about what they do by talking about it. It is a performance and the doing and experiencing of it is where their art exists. “So let’s go.” I suggest, “Let’s go see this thing in action.” “No,” says James,”This is already it, us talking about Go Go Star with you over samgyeopsal and him (Colin) not talking. That’s what it is.” (more…)
