Rubber Seoul 2009

4168277776 a1145a0942 o Rubber Seoul 2009

Rubber Seoul is an annual fundraiser for Hillcrest AIDS center in South Africa, helping people with AIDS. You could come out for the ‘feel-good’ element of donating money to a good cause – or because you could get into three Hongdae clubs for one low, 10,000 won price. Either way, 100% of the cover charge went to the organization.
Bridget and the Puppycats – we arrived to Janes Groove fashionably late, and missed Sotto Gamba. One of the Puppycats played the first accordian I’ve seen on a Hongdae stage.

The One One Four Talks with Sunshine State

Sunshine State

Sunshine State is from Toronto and their pop-acoustic sound and quirky narratives are quickly earning them fans in Canada, the US, UK, and Japan. Band members include, Aleza (vocals) and veteran Canadian musician, James Bryan (guitar/producer). James is a former member of The Philosopher Kings and Prozzak and is an award winning producer and songwriter who has worked with an long list of musicians, including Nelly Furtado, Fefe Dobson and Divine Brown. A few years ago, James was looking  for a different kind of voice to use on his solo album, Beautiful World (2005), and was blown away when his long-time friend Aleza sang for it.  The two took the album across Canada and started writing Sunshine State songs along the way.

Sunshine State’s self-titled debut album was released in May 2007 and since then they have been described as a “brilliant live show.” We talked with them about this, coming to Korea, and “Drug Dealer” – the song everyone is curious about. (more…)

Presenting the South Mountain Jazz Orchestra at the Welcome Post.

As mentioned in this month’s schedule, the 6th annual Jarasum Jazz Festival was one of the better jazz performances I’ve seen in person. A few flaws kept it from being an even better show, but it’s an event I’ll be looking for next year when October rolls around again. (more…)

Ssighborggggg and Super Color Super: Growing the Korean DIY Music Scene

sighborg Ssighborggggg and Super Color Super: Growing the Korean DIY Music Scene
In a scene rife with cover bands it’s a breath of fresh air to encounter a Westerner band with a sound of their own. Yet Ssighborggggg (that’s not a typo) are more than a breath of fresh air, in fact they’re more like a breath of Martian air: A bizarre sound clash of beautiful earl bleeding synth lines, drum loops of unsettling off beats, and mutant guitar riffs that would give Steve Vai a headache. Their live show is more of an experience that anything else, with two masked individuals almost completely ignoring the audience and refusing to interact in anyway, instead engrossed in working through the intricate songs.
