EXHIBITION | “Seoul, City of Movies” at the Cheonggyecheon Museum is a collection of posters, pamphlets, screen caps, and other materials from the early years of Korean cinema. You can expect insight into the national consciousness of the day, and hey – it’s a good place to get out of the cold. The event runs through Sunday and admission is free. The museum hours are 9 AM to 9 PM on weekdays, and 10 AM to 6 PM on weekends. To get to the Cheonggycheon Museum, go to Yongdu Station (Line 2), Exit 5. The museum is a 10 minute walk from the exit. Bizet’s “Carmen” to Close Daegu International Opera Festival

2009 DIOF_-½+ú+aThe Daegu International Opera Festival comes to a close this weekend with it’s biggest and most promoted production of the year: Bizet’s Carmen. The opera with run for three days; This Thursday (29th) and Friday (30th) at 7:30 and twice on Saturday at 3 and 7:30. The cast of each show will be with Russian graduate of the Lenin Conservatory Egorova Ekaterina playing the lead on Thursday night and the Saturday matinee. Tickets are still available but are going fast.



“Won’s Mother” at the Daegu International Opera Festival.

Tomorrow night at the Daegu Opera House, the Pohang Opera Company will perform “Won’s Mother” a Korean opera based on a play by Doo-jin Cho about a woman grieving for her husband in sixteenth century Andong. Tickets are still available for Friday’s performance at 7:30 and Saturday’s matinée at 3. This is the first and only Korea opera at this year’s Daegu International Opera Festival.

“Der Freischutz” at The Daegu Opera House this Weekend

C.M Weber’s “Der Freischutz” will be performed by visiting The Karlsruhe National Theatre of Germany as past of the 2009 Daegu International Opera Festival.  ”Der Freischutz” is considered the first opera of the German Romantic period and is know for its nationalist sentiments and generous emotionality. The opera was first performed in June 1821. This is the first time the opera will be performed in Daegu.

Youth in Asia Tour: Swingset Committee and Dairyland Youth Tour Korea

Seoul’s own electro band Swingset Committee are set to join Dairyland Youth in a tour across Korea and Japan this November. Swingset Committee is the newest member of the Minneapolis indie label Catlick Records. The Youth in Asia Tour will hit all three of Korea’s major cities: Nov. 6 Club FF in Seoul, Nov. 7 in Daegu at Club That and Nov. 8 in Busan at Vinyl Underground. The tour then heads to Japan to tour across the country from Nov. 9-15

“Sunshine Cleaning” at Daegu Art Cinema

poster 600x859 Sunshine Cleaning at Daegu Art Cinema Sept. 23 to Oct. 6th the Daegu Art Cinema will be screening the critically acclaimed “Sunshine Cleaning” that premiered at Sundance in 2008. Also added to the schedule is “One Week” a Canadian film starring Joshua Jackson that debuted last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Both films are scheduled everyday at varying times. Check the website for show times. In Busan, the Eric Rohmer programme continues until the end of the month with subtitled screening everyday. (more…)

Puccini’s Turandot to Open The Daegu International Opera Festival this Thursday

This Thursday Sept. 24th, the 7th Annual Daegu International Opera Festival will open with Puccini’s Turandot. Tickets are still available and range from w10,000 to w70,000. The show runs again on Friday the 25th at 7:30 and at 3pm on Sat. the 26th. The production pairs the Daegu City Opera Company with Italian director Marco Pucci Catena and conductor Silvano Corsi, deputy conductor of Teatro dell’Opera in Rome.

Isabel Coixet’s “The Secret Life of Words” will be showing at the Daegu Art Cinema this Saturday (Sept. 19) at 6:30pm and Tuesday (Sept. 22) at 8:30pm.
